Open root pass welding in Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) is always challenging due to the nonlinear random variations in pipe gaps and the presence of tacks. The art of manual welding demands significant expertise from experienced welders, who must adeptly manage various variables in real-time. As the industry shifts towards robotic welding, tracking solutions utilizing laser or vision systems have emerged to tackle tracking challenges. Nevertheless, the adjustment of welding parameters (such as wire feed speed) and motion parameters (like travel speed) remains crucial for achieving a consistent, high-quality weld This work presents an adaptive control approach to pipe welding. The method combines a vision-based system that replicates the perception of welders with real-time control to live-adjust welding and motion parameters based on the instantaneous pipe gap, learning about the tack and fusing it on the root pass - a critical challenge for robotic welding applications. The controller monitors the state condition and communicates the proper process and motion update with the robot according to the real-time gap and tack state. The resulting closed-loop system enables higher quality and consistency of weld throughout the pipe welding.

Ahmad is the Senior Director of Robotics and AI at Novarc. He started his career as an automation engineer developing PLC and HMI programs in the automotive industry. He has more than 12 years of experience in design, commissioning, and robot programming. Prior to Novarc, he founded a startup technology company creating a medical device to assess and quantify Parkinson’s disease severity. At Novarc he is in charge for end-to-end integration and testing of automation features in robotic welding. Ahmad is part of the ISO Robotic committee (TC299) representing Canada together with some other experts across the country. He was accredited for 2025 release of ISO 10218 for robotic safety. He is also part of American Welding Society Robotics committee (D16). Ahmad is registered as Professional Engineer (P.Eng) and is also a Functional Safety Engineer (TÜV Rheinland). He has a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Tehran and a Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of British Columbia.
